Dance Styles
Tap
Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (jazz) tap and Broadway tap.
Broadway tap focuses on dance; it is widely performed in musical theats. Rhythm tap focuses on musicality, and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the jazz tradition.
The sound is made by shoes that have a metal “tap” on the heel and toe. There are different brands of shoes which sometimes differ in the way they sound.
This is such a fun and lively class. Why not join us?
Modern
Modern dance emerged in the early 20th century when young dancers in Europe rebelled against the rigid constraints of Classical Ballet. Modern Dancers preferred to exhibit a freedom of expression by dancing more liberally and expressing their emotions, they were unable to do this in the Academic Institutions, so Modern dance evolved outside of this environment. Modern Dancers enjoyed the freedom of dancing without the constraints of shoes, tutus and ballet dance style.
A new era of dance had emerged, dancing bare foot and wearing fashionable costumes and dancing with freedom of expression.
In our studio, dancers are encouraged to express their feelings and interpret their emotions into their own unique flowing style and steps. Come check it out!
Hip Hop
Hip-hop dance sometimes called “new style” refers to fun, energetic street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music.
Today, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.
Hip Hop is a dance course during which you’ll build a routine from scratch. This dance style is a creative fusion of modern and funk dance styles – it’s a very relaxed, open style that will stretch you, tone you, challenge and enthral you! As you learn the routine, you’ll also get to grips with your body’s movement, timing and precision.
This is a class you can enjoy at any level of dance knowledge!
Come find and celebrate your funky self! You will leave feeling fabulous and even a little surprised at what you can actually do!

Lyrical
Lyrical dance is a style of dance created by merging ballet, jazz and contemporary dance techniques. It is performed to music with lyrics to inspire movements to express strong emotions the choreographer feels from the lyrics in the chosen song.
Because lyrical dancing focuses on the expression of strong emotion, the style concentrates more on individual approach and expressiveness than the precision of the dancer’s movements. It has a relatively recent history and a genesis based on the coming together of ballet with rock/folk/pop/alternative music and a variety of jazz dance styles and modern dance.
Competition
Competitive dance is a popular, widespread sport in which competitors perform dances in any of several permitted dance styles—such hip-hop, lyrical, modern, and tap—before a common group of judges. Dancers who compete at these regional competitions are students ranging in age from approximately four to eighteen years old. Dance studios arrange for their classes to compete as groups.
Advanced dancers may be chosen to compete solos, duets, trios, or in a small group dance in addition to or in place of large group routines. Competitions typically begin in January and end in July or August.
Dancers must be physically fit because even short dances can be physically demanding. Dancers attend classes during competition season, to refine their competitive routines, and during off-season to prepare for the next upcoming competition season.
